How to make a Christmas ad for your small business
A Christmas ad for a small business works when it shows what you make or do, gives one reason to buy now (a gift, an order deadline, local pickup), and ends with how to get it. Make it 15–20 seconds and vertical for Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, plus a 6-second cut for Stories. The season is big: the National Retail Federation forecasts US holiday sales in November and December 2026 to grow 4.2% to $1.013 trillion, and American Express estimated $18 billion was spent at small retailers and restaurants on Small Business Saturday 2025 alone. Below is a posting calendar for 2026, six ad ideas, what to put on screen, and a real 20-second Christmas ad and 6-second cut made from 19 clips of a wreath workshop.
19 clips of a shop making Christmas wreaths became a 20-second Reel with an order deadline, then a 6-second Story cut. Sped up. Phone-size version.
When to post: a 2026 holiday calendar
| When | Ad | Message |
|---|---|---|
| Early November | "It's here" | Your holiday products, menu or services are back |
| Nov 27 – Nov 30 | Black Friday, Small Business Saturday (Nov 28), Cyber Monday | The offer, with its end date |
| Dec 1 – 15 | Gift ad | "The gift they'll actually use", gift cards, bundles |
| Before your shipping cutoff | Deadline ad | "Order by Dec 18 for Christmas delivery" |
| Dec 19 – 24 | Last-minute ad | Local pickup, gift cards, extended hours |
| Dec 26 – Jan 2 | Thank-you | A thank-you to customers, plus what's next |
One set of footage covers all six. Film it once in early November and re-edit the text and length for each moment.
6 Christmas ad ideas that work for small businesses
- Behind the scenes. Hands making the product: baking, wrapping, arranging, building. This is the example below, and it suits any maker.
- The gift guide. Three products, a price each, one line per shot.
- The deadline. The same video with a countdown line: "Order by Dec 18" or "Last pickup Dec 23".
- The gift card. For services (salons, restaurants, gyms, clinics): a card in a hand, the experience it buys, how to get it.
- The team. Everyone in the shop wishing customers a merry Christmas. Good for the thank-you slot.
- The local angle. Your street, your window, your sign. "Shop small on Main Street this Saturday."
What to put on screen
| Moment | Text | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 0–2 s | What it is, 3–6 words | "Handmade for your front door" |
| Middle | Optional: one product or price | "Fresh wreaths from $45" |
| Last 4 s | Name, offer or price, deadline, where | "Hollow Pine Home & Gift · From $45 · Order by Dec 18 · hollowpine.shop" |
A deadline gives people a reason to act now. Put it on the end card, and update the date as the season moves on. Use instrumental music: lyrics compete with your text, and many popular Christmas songs aren't cleared for ads.
What to film (one morning)
- The hero product held up or turned toward the camera, in warm light.
- Hands making it: 3–4 close-ups of different steps.
- The finishing touch: a ribbon, lights, a bow, the box closing.
- People: your team working, a customer choosing or picking up.
- The place: your window or storefront, decorated.
Shoot vertically, 5–10 seconds per shot. String lights in the background look great but can flicker on camera, so test a clip first.
The example: a 20-second Christmas ad for a shop
We uploaded 19 clips of a workshop making Christmas wreaths (trimming fir, tying ribbons, adding lights, choosing ornaments) to Novacut. The shop name, prices and dates are made up. We wrote:
Make a 20-second vertical Christmas ad for Instagram Reels and Facebook for my shop, Hollow Pine Home & Gift. We make fresh, handmade Christmas wreaths. Open on the most beautiful finished wreath being turned toward the camera with the text "Handmade for your front door" in the first two seconds. Then show the wreaths being made: trimming the fir, tying the ribbon, adding the lights, the team decorating together, and a customer picking out decorations. Use a warm, festive instrumental (no lyrics). End on a card: "Hollow Pine Home & Gift" with "Fresh wreaths from $45 · Order by Dec 18 · hollowpine.shop" underneath. Give every horizontal shot its own crop on the people or the product so it fills the 9:16 frame with no black bars, and keep all text large, inside the middle of the frame, clear of the top 15% and the bottom 35% where the app buttons sit.
Novacut opened on a woman holding a wreath up to the camera with the line in a cream serif, ran the making shots (fir, shears, ribbon, lights, ornaments), and ended on a dark green card in gold type over a woman holding a finished wreath, all to a cozy instrumental with no lyrics. It also told us it had cropped the horizontal clips with one centered zoom rather than a crop per shot, so a few hands are cut at the edges. That's an easy follow-up if you want tighter framing.
Then a 6-second version for Stories and bumper ads: "Make a 6-second version for a YouTube bumper and Story ad: the finished wreath turning to the camera, one shot of it being made, and the end card."
Running it as a paid ad
- Start early. Ad prices rise as big retailers spend more toward Black Friday and December, so a small budget goes further in early November.
- Stay local. A radius around your shop, or your delivery area, beats a broad audience.
- Swap the text, keep the footage. A new end card for each stage of the calendar keeps the ad fresh without a new shoot.
- Give each version a week. Meta's delivery needs about 50 results in 7 days to settle before you judge it.
Mistakes that waste a Christmas ad
- Opening on "Merry Christmas from…". Open on the product.
- No deadline or date. "Order by Dec 18" sells more than "Shop now".
- A song with lyrics. It fights your text and may not be cleared for ads. Music licensing basics →
- One version all season. Update the end card as the calendar moves.
- Black bars on horizontal clips. Crop every shot to fill the vertical frame.
FAQ
How long should a Christmas ad be?
15–20 seconds for Instagram and Facebook Reels, 6–10 seconds for Stories and YouTube bumpers, and 21–34 seconds if you run it as a TikTok in-feed ad (TikTok's recommendation).
When should a small business start Christmas ads?
Early November, so the first ad runs before Black Friday (Nov 27, 2026) and Small Business Saturday (Nov 28). Then refresh it for gifts in early December, your order deadline, and last-minute local shopping.
What should a small business put in a Christmas ad?
What you make or do, shown in action, one reason to buy now (a gift, a price, a deadline), and how to get it: website, pickup or opening hours.
Can I use Christmas songs in my ad?
Only if you have the rights for advertising. Many famous Christmas recordings are licensed for personal posts but not paid ads. A warm instrumental is the safe choice.
Can I make a Christmas ad without a designer?
Yes. Film 15–20 short clips on your phone and describe the ad to Novacut. It cuts the clips to music, adds your text and end card, and makes the shorter versions on request.
